Canterbury Regional Council
Why I'm standingI am standing for Environment Canterbury because I am deeply invested in the protection and enhancement of our environment and community.
My prioritiesLet's see this Council make decisions with community.Make changes now to how we respond to climate change, so that our region can thrive into the future.Improve the waterways so that our region can live up to the communities expectations.
Why meI will bring a different view due to my age and experiences. I've worked in both the community and government space for a few years, and have also held a number of positions that have required me to make decisions on complex issues.

Why I'm standingWe are faced with climate change globally, huge losses in native biodiversity nationally and nitrate and other water pollution issues locally. These things are all linked. I can bring my skills to work collaboratively to find the balance we need to prosper whilst protecting the natural resources we care about.
My prioritiesProtect and improve water quality across the region to support healthy water supply and ecosystems.Recognise our responsibility to future generations by focusing on sustainable resource use.Provide and support transport options that offer a convenient viable low-carbon alternatives.
Why meI've completed a Master of Water Resources from the University of Canterbury following 15 years of scientific and planning experience. I'm involved with restoration planting locally. I've advocated for biodiversity and water quality as a community representative on a regional committee gaining a sense of what works and what doesn't.

Why I'm standingEnvironment-Canterbury needs help. Pressured from all sides, with competing resource uses, it can seldom make everyone happy. Indeed ECan receives the most blame, for both doing too much and never enough. So I will help hear and represent community views, bringing fair balance to decisions where this is much needed.
My prioritiesHelp chart a sustainable course for Canterbury production, to balance incomes with environment well.Keep water pure and biodiversity rich through positive collaboration with land users to reduce waste.Reduce emissions every way possible to mitigate climate change in regard to present and future beings.
Why meOpen and honest, I will hit the ground running based on wide, relevant experience: ECan Councillor Christchurch East 2007-10; Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board 2013-16; Christchurch Estuary Association 2009-18; Cashmere Residents' Association 2011-18; Predator Free Port Hills 2016-19 etc. Christchurch-born, six years travel away, self-employed IT professional, always volunteering eg civil defence.

Why I'm standingI believe we are the guardians of our environment. In Canterbury there has never been greater need to protect our pristine water which is at serious risk. The need for environmental action and transport transformation is urgent.
My prioritiesMaintaining safe drinking water and getting our rivers back to being swimmable.Protect and restore our source water, native habitat species and landscapes for future generations.Develop an integrated, sustainable public transport system, reducing emissions and congestion.
Why meI have been a longstanding Community Board Chair, and a Christchurch City Councillor for two terms, chairing committees on infrastructure, transport, environment and community development. I will bring integrity, experience, skills and leadership essential for a new, democratic ECan.

Why I'm standingECan has lacked leadership for a decade—because the previous government sacked ECan. Now that we have a chance to elect our regional council, I want to be part of it, to bring strong environmental leadership back to the Canterbury region.
My prioritiesProtecting and restoring Canterbury water for ours and future generations.Increasing public and active transport, and reducing the carbon emissions from private motor cars.Reducing the rate at which Greater Christchurch is encroaching across the Canterbury Plains.
Why meI have strong connections to a number of communities, groups, and local organisations. My background in science allows me to process some of the complex information regularly presented to ECan, while my experience in the media allows me to communicate that to constituents clearly and understandably.
